MHA GENOTYPING PROGRAM
Back to Registration and DNA Information

ABOUT THE MHA GENOTYPING PROGRAM

Genotyping (DNA)
(Testing Fee = $50)

Morabs born in year 2000, and Morabs used for breeding, must have DNA on file with the Morab Horse Register. Please read the following to determine the course of action necessary for your Morab.

Definitions

Qualified – the horse has been DNA tested and is on file as purebred Morab, Morgan, or Arabian.

Verified – A horse’s parentage has been proven through DNA testing.

DNA Testing – A genetic test used to determine the purity of bloodlines and parentage.

Registering a Morab born January 1, 2000, or later

The owner/agent is responsible to verify, through DNA, the parentage of the Morab being registered. Once a DNA test has been performed on your Morab (see DNA Procedures), the results will be cross-referenced with the sire and dam to confirm parentage.

Morab breeding stock must be Qualified so that offspring may be registered with MHA. The owner/breeder is responsible to see that the breeding animal(s) has DNA on file with MHA (see DNA Procedures) so that offspring may be cross-referenced in the future.

How do I know if my Morab, Arabian, or Morgan has DNA on file?

You will need to contact the appropriate registry for this information…

  • Morabs registered with MHA – Contact the MHA Registry at (517) 541-9702, or email registrar@morabs.com, or write the MHA Registrar, W15306 Boldig Road, Tigerton, WI 54486 .

  • Arabians – Contact the Arabian registry (AHR) at 1-303-450-4748. Ask for a copy of the DNA Test Report for that animal (the certificate alone is not acceptable). There may be a small, one-time fee for this document. Once MHA has a copy of the report, the horse will not need another for registering future Morab offspring. If the Arabian does not have DNA on file, ask the AHR how to acquire this test.

  • Morgans – The Morgan registry (AMHA) will only release DNA information to another registry; therefore, MHA will acquire the DNA information necessary for the Morgan parent.

NOTE: ANY MORGAN OR ARABIAN MAY BE DNA TESTED THROUGH MHA FOR THE PURPOSE OF PARENTAL VERIFICATION OF A MORAB FOAL FOR A ONE-TIME FEE OF $50. HOWEVER, THIS DNA TEST WILL ONLY BE VALID FOR MORAB FOALS AND NOT MORGAN OR ARABIAN FOALS. THE MORGAN AND ARABIAN REGISTRIES ONLY RECOGNIZE TESTING DONE THROUGH THEIR OWN REGISTRIES.

REGISTRATION AND QUALIFICATION PROCEDURES
